Typical food from Alicante
The province of Alicante, located on the beautiful Costa Blanca, is famous not only for its stunning beaches and rich history, but also for its delicious gastronomy. Alicante food is a fusion of Mediterranean flavours that reflects the diversity and cultural richness of the region.
1. Sangria Sangria is one of Spain's most iconic drinks, and Alicante is no exception. This refreshing drink is traditionally made with red wine, fresh fruit, sugar and a touch of liqueur, often brandy or triple sec.
2. Coca de Mollitas
Coca de mollitas is a kind of savoury cake covered with small flour crumbs, but you can also find it with chocolate (it is usually only liked by people from Alicante).
3. Coca amb Tonyina: A Bonfire Classic Coca amb tonyina is a dish traditionally associated with the Hogueras de San Juan, Alicante's most important festival. This coca is filled with tuna, onion and pine nuts, and sometimes red pepper. Its unmistakable flavour and texture make it a favourite with locals and visitors alike.
4. Arroz a Banda: The King of Rices Arroz a banda is one of the most emblematic dishes of the Costa Blanca. It is prepared with rice cooked in a tasty fish stock, which gives it a deep and delicious flavour. Traditionally, it is served with alioli, a garlic sauce that perfectly complements the dish. It is a feast for rice lovers and a gastronomic experience not to be missed.
5. Nougat from Jijona and Alicante: The Christmas Sweet Although turrón is a typical Christmas sweet, in Alicante it is eaten all year round. There are two main varieties: turrón de Jijona, which is soft and made with honey and ground almonds, and turrón de Alicante, which is hard and made with whole almonds and honey. Both are delicious and represent a deep-rooted tradition in the region.
8. Horchata and Fartons: El Capricho Dulce (Sweet Caprice) Although horchata is more typical of Valencia, it is also very popular in Alicante, especially in summer. It is made with tigernuts and served cold. It is often accompanied by fartons, long, fluffy buns that are perfect for dipping in the horchata.
